Our Kindergarten Program

At TPK, our kindergarten program takes a developmental approach to academics, providing children with a strong foundation for elementary school while nurturing them socially, emotionally, spiritually, and academically. Students work toward all Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) objectives across literature, math, science, social studies, art, music, and physical education, with learning grounded in a Biblical perspective.

Our literacy program combines phonics and whole-language instruction with comprehension strategies and opportunities for both interactive and independent writing. In math and science, children learn through hands-on experiences that invite them to listen, participate, explore, and make connections alongside their teachers and classmates. Throughout the year, concepts are introduced in a concrete, sequential way, allowing children to build their understanding and confidence as they grow.

Above all, we seek to create a loving and nurturing environment where children are known, encouraged, and prepared to enter elementary school with the academic skills, confidence, curiosity, and character they need to thrive.

What A Year in Kindergarten Looks Like

Kindergarten at TPK is a year of growing in faith, confidence, curiosity, and independence. In one small class, children receive individualized support while also learning to collaborate, problem-solve, and build positive relationships with their classmates. Each day includes Scripture, prayer, and devotions, while academics are taught through a Christ-centered lens. From UFLI phonics and literature to math, science, social studies, and nature exploration, children build a strong academic foundation while discovering God’s design and learning to see His world with wonder.

Learning is hands-on, active, and purposeful. Children explore nature, conduct science experiments, build and create through STEM projects, write their own stories, and develop the skills to think critically, work cooperatively, and persevere through challenges. Throughout the year, special experiences like the Nativity Pageant and Dad’s Car Race give children opportunities to try new things, celebrate one another, and grow in confidence. As the oldest students at TPK, kindergarteners also have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and become positive role models for younger students. By the end of the year, children have met the Virginia Standards of Learning and are equipped academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually to flourish in first grade.
