Truro Preschool and Kindergarten (TPK) began in 1979 as a ministry of Truro Church to meet growing needs for preschool care and education for church and staff families. Joan Strong began this school with these scriptures on her heart:
“The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”
Deuteronomy 6:4-9
“And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”
Luke 2:52
In March of 1979 with nine children, three girls and six boys, Truro Preschool began. Truro Preschool grew, adding a kindergarten in the 1980s and an afternoon preschool program as well. Joan was the Director, a classroom teacher and chapel leader. She created a beautiful chapel curriculum and lead this time with the children once a week. After Joan retired, the school continued under Tricia Tabb’s leadership for fourteen years as she built on the beautiful foundational work that Joan had created with her team. Tricia extended the preschool day by one hour and established the Imagination Factory program for children to stay for creative play in the afternoons. She started an annual community event and fundraiser “Running for the Kids” that raises money for scholarships and increases our ability to serve families across this area. Under Tricia’s leadership, staff began receiving training in the techniques of “Conscious Discipline” that remains a major value and tool for teaching social and emotional regulation to our children.
The work of TPK continues with Fiona Bracy as Director. Children grow in all areas of their development: physically, emotionally academically and spiritually. Teachers and assistants create positive connections and intentional activities for all our children to learn and grow and experience God’s love for them. We have created parenting classes both online and in person and continue to look for ways to meet the needs of families in this area and create a fun and healthy place for children to thrive.
Please schedule a private tour of Truro Preschool and Kindergarten to get the best possible experience. Our guide will show you around the school and classrooms and answer any questions you might have.
