What a wild weather week! We’ve had snow and ice, closings and delays – and there’s more winter weather on the way! We hear that some of you LOVE the snow and some of you are starting to get a little tired of it already… so we thought we’d share a few fun snow day ideas for both outside and inside play on your snow day.

 

If you’re bundling up and heading outside…

I’m loving the idea of a snow kitchen. This one from Sun Hats and Wellie Boots uses play kitchen utensils (you probably already have them!) to create a little snow fun.  Snow cakes, snow cookies, snow pies, snow tea…

 

If you remember making a baking soda volcano for science class as a kid…

The good old baking soda volcano was (and might still be) my favorite science experiment ever. In this one, your kids can build a snow volcano and together you can make it erupt – colorfully, too! See how at Growing a Jeweled Rose.

Last year we made snow paint in squeeze bottles, and it was super fun even for the big kids. Our snow-day list for this year includes this fun spray snow paint (see how here) – we like how the spray colors the snow and it lasts a lot longer than the squeeze bottles did! A hint: The gel colors show up best, and if your paint freezes up in the cold you can add a little vinegar or rubbing alcohol. We got inexpensive spray bottles at the dollar store.

 

If you’re looking to try something new (and want to stay inside)…

Did you know you can make a crystal snowflake with Borax and pipe cleaners? This is a little bit of a hands-on project, but older kids can do the measuring and stirring, and everyone can create a pipe cleaner shape to place in the solution to crystallize. Using glue, salt, and liquid watercolor paint, you can create these cool raised snowflake paintings. I love the texture of these. You and your kids can design your own snowflakes and watch the colors seep in around the crystals of salt.
