What Do Children Learn Through Art?

Preschool art is about much more than producing a finished product. In an open-ended art experience, children experiment with materials, make choices, revise plans, and try again. Paper, paint, glue, scissors, playdough, clay, stamps, tape, collage materials, and drawing tools offer children opportunities to strengthen fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination while exploring color, shape, texture, line, and space. Just as importantly, art gives children a way to express ideas, feelings, and experiences and to build confidence as their ideas take shape.

Art also offers a natural opportunity to help children recognize God as our Creator and to celebrate the creativity He has placed in each person. Instead of comparing one child’s work with another’s, we can celebrate effort, growth, ideas, and individuality. At home, offer a small collection of art materials and let your child decide what to create. Resist the temptation to fix or improve the picture; instead, ask, “Tell me about your picture” or “What did you discover?” These simple conversations honor your child’s ideas and encourage confidence and perseverance.
